Free Louie the Chimpanzee from Solitary Confinement

  • by: Sue Lee

Louie the chimpanzee was taken away from his natural habitat as an infant, to be used in the entertainment field as a prop for photo sessions with humans. He was forcibly removed from his mother far too early - and probably hadn’t even stopped nursing.

According to a recent PETA investigation, Louie now lives in horrid conditions at the DeYoung Family Zoo in Michigan. He was useful to the owners as an infant, but once he grew into an adult-sized monkey he was too big to be used as a prop for photo ops.

The owners placed Louie in solitary confinement. Since he is of no use to the zookeepers anymore, he stays in this tiny cell alone, depressed and anxious.

Like humans, chimpanzees need companionship. The DeYoung Family Zoo isn’t giving Louie what he needs - physically, mentally, or socially. Since they don't have any use for him anymore, it's time for Louie to live a better life outside of the zoo’s walls.

Sign your name and urge DeYoung Family Zoo officials to place Louie into a safe and reputable sanctuary where he can live out his remaining years with proper care, companionship and enrichment.
To the DeYoung Family Zoo:

I urge you to release Louie the chimpanzee from the zoo and place him in a reputable chimpanzee sanctuary.

Louie was removed from his habitat far too early and against his will. He did not choose to be a part of the entertainment field, and his current state of living is unnatural for chimpanzees. A recent PETA investigation found Louie in solitary confinement, a completely unnatural state for chimpanzees. Louie requires companionship and socialization with other monkeys; similar to humans, solitary confinement can cause severe depression and anxiety for Louie.

These living conditions are cruel and unnecessary. Since he is of no use to the zoo anymore, I strongly urge you to release Louie from captivity and place him in the care of a sanctuary where he can live a better quality of life. Louie deserves to live his remaining years in the company of other chimpanzees, and with ample space to run and forage for food.
