Does this look like freedom to you?
Lucy was born in Sri Lanka, and found as an orphan. Her exact year of birth is unknown, but is guessed as being 1975.

Samantha came to the Valley Zoo from an elephant orphanage in Zimbabwe. She was adopted by the zoo in 1987 when she was about a year old, as a companion for Lucy
Samantha

These beautiful animals have spent years as slaves to humans, working in ways elephants shouldn't. Their enclosure is shoddy, small and not fit for any creature of their size!

Although both we're orphans, it doesn't excuse the fact they are living under such stressful conditions. Over the years, I have witnessed this pattern. Pacing, swinging their heavy bodies back and forth, languishing. These two truly splendid elephants don't deserve to suffer any longer. Its time they we're taken to a place to live out the rest of their years with other companion females.

While the zoo claims to have $125,000 set aside for a new enclosure, its not enough. Its been years and they still haven't done what they said they would do. Samantha and Lucy are slowly running out of time, there might not be a tommorrow.
