Ending Job Discrimination
There is a grave injustice being ignored in this country. As the push to legalization of marijuana continues to grow, and the lies perpetuating it's stigma are being torn down we are ignoring the fact that employers are legally allowed to discriminate agenst those who choose to partake in this new found freedom. The "drug-free workplace" form is a joke, might as well call it "weed-free workplace" form because that's all it's ever going to detect. The hard drugs available on the black market leave the system within 24-72 hrs. I'm talking about the drugs that are actually harming our society. While 1 joint can remain in the system for weeks. A plant that is legally allowed to be purchased within some states, the number of which continues to grow. An industry that is not only having a positive affect on the medical side, but a positive affect on communities across the country. The Denver post reported that tens of millions of additional tax revenue was being generated due to the sale of marijuana. Tax revenue that is going towards building better and bigger schools. For over 50 years marijuana has held this stigma of being a useless "drug", but it's time to tare down these lies created by lobbyists that don't want to see it's vast uses affect the profitability of their companies. It's time to stop thinking "drug screening" is not directly related to marijuana. It's time for marijuana smokers to get their "equal opportunity employment". There are a lot of jobs out there like airline pilots, bus drivers, police officers, ect. that it makes sense to drug screen. Other people's lives are in their hands. Let me share a little story with you. In my search of employment I've applied to many place. One of which, that will remain nameless, was for a janitorial position at a shopping center. When I went in to be interviewed it seemed like they where extremely impressed. I explained my history, my work ethic, my life goals. It felt like it was a sure thing that I'd get the job. All until the very end when I openly stated, "Your going to find THC in my system. I don't do it before work, and would never bring it to work." Almost instantly the interview was over and they took back the packet of papers I was supposed to bring home with me. As if all because I smoke a little bit of marijuana in the privacy of my own home I'm not good enough to scrub toilets and buff floors. As I continue to search for employment it's staggering to see the number of jobs available that a high school kid could preform, but they won't even consider me as an applicant because I choose marijuana over alcohol, cocaine, heroin, acid, ect. It's time to end this injustice, who is with me?
