Tell Boehner and Cantor to Drop Their DOMA Defense Now!
A federal appeals court has just ruled that the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act is unconstitutional. This marks a big victory in our fight to end a law that treats same-sex couples as second-class citizens.
Unfortunately, the anti-gay, Republican House leadership has shown no signs of dropping their case to defend this law -- the law that President Obama bravely refused to continue fighting for last year.
Speaker John Boehner and Majority Leader Eric Cantor have already committed to spending up to $1.5 million in taxpayer funds on these cases. They need to hear from you now before they waste even one more cent appealing this discriminatory law -- possibly to the Supreme Court.
Tell Speaker Boehner and Majority Leader Cantor: The writing is on the wall for DOMA. Stop wasting taxpayer money defending discrimination.
SUBJECT: Boehner and Cantor: Drop your DOMA defense now
Dear [Decision Maker],
The First Circuit's decision that the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is unconstitutional offers further proof that you are out of step with the majority of Americans who find it shameful to uphold discrimination.
I don't want my tax dollars wasted defending discrimination. Instead, Congress should focus its energy on repealing this harmful and discriminatory law.
I urge you to drop your case, and instead of fighting for a law that treats same-sex couples like second-class citizens, show true leadership by supporting equality for all.
