Help STOP Habitat Loss Now for the Sake of Our Fish and Other Affected Species!
Each year, thousands of unchecked small projects destroy aquatic habitat and kill fish and other species in rivers, lakes and streams across Canada.
The cumulative effects of these unchecked projects such as road building across streams, shoreline retaining walls and dredging or excavating in water, are leading to irreversible habitat loss and negative effects on the lives of many species. For example:
• Salmon and trout are prevented from going home to spawn.
• Natural shorelines are slowly converted to rock and concrete.
• Quality habitat for fish and wildlife is permanently changed or lost.
Today, we ask that you sign this petition to strengthen our voice for the species and habitat that need us.
Dear Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Canada,
I support the Canadian Wildlife Federation's Stop Habitat Loss Now petition asking you to:
Stop ignoring small projects on Canada's lakes, rivers, streams, and coasts that are destroying aquatic habitat andkilling fish. This must include using all the conservation and habitat protection tools the Department has under theFisheries Act to ensure the thousands of small projects that destroy and alter habitat annually do not add up to bigimpacts for our fish and wildlife.
Canada has the regulatory tools to protect aquatic habitat and restore the legacy of degraded areas. What is needed is
action by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada to apply the habitat protection legislation and STOP habitat loss now for a healthy future for fish and wildlife.
