Marine wildlife need your help! Sign now to support our Marine Action Plan

Thanks to support from fellow Canadians and organizations across the country, the Canadian Wildlife Federation's Marine Action Plan has improved protection for Canada's marine mammals over the last several years.

But marine mammals continue to be endangered by entanglement in fishing gear, lethal vessel strikes, chemical pollution, dwindling and changing food sources, and disruptive noise from ocean activities. Extinction is only avoidable for many of our marine species if we make the investments needed for change.

The development and adoption of new technologies that eliminate the threats of entanglement and collisions from our fishing and shipping industries is critical to the future of Canada's majestic whales. Technologies that make shipping and commercial fishing safe for whales also ensures the prosperity of those industries into the future.

The North Atlantic Right Whale is an example of a species we will lose if things don't change. There are fewer than 330 individuals remaining, and many die each year through accidental harm from our ocean industries.

We must act now before another marine species is forever lost. Sign your name and tell lawmakers to support the Marine Action Plan!
Dear Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Canada and Minister of Transport Canada,

I support the Canadian Wildlife Federation's 2022 Marine Action Plan petition urging the Canadian Government to increase investments in the development and adoption of new technologies for our fishing and shipping industries that will eliminate harmful entanglements and ship strikes to Canada's whales.

Specifically, the government must:

  • Renew the Whalesafe Gear Adoption Fund to accelerate the development and adoption of new fishing gear that prevents the entanglement of whales.

  • Increase funding in satellite, underwater acoustic and imaging technologies to allow forecasting and real-time alerts to the fishing and shipping industries of areas where whales are present so they can take action to avoid causing injury or death.

With continued government and private sector support, we can stop unintentional harm to our marine mammals and continue to benefit from our oceans.

Sincerely,
[your name]
