Save Canada's Woodland Caribou

Give threatened woodland caribou your voice, and help protect a Canadian national icon from extinction!

If caribou could lobby the Ontario government, they would. Their habitat in the province is dwindling at an alarming rate, and they are being wiped out of forests because of it. In fact, it seems that everyone except caribou have the ear of the Ontario government -- their habitat continues to be destroyed by massive clear-cuts.

Woodland caribou are a national icon -- they once roamed throughout Canada and continue to live on the back of our quarter. Once strong and abundant, caribou are making their last stand in the forests of Ontario, where they require undisturbed habitat -- free from logging -- to survive.

Urge Premier McGuinty to keep his promise to protect caribou and take action now to protect Canada's national icon before it's too late.
Dear Premier McGuinty,

Do you have a quarter in your pocket right now? What's on the back of it? Unless it's a special edition (we love those Mounties!) you're probably looking at a woodland caribou, a symbol of Canadian heritage on the verge of being wiped out of Ontario's southern Boreal Forest--on your watch.

On the other side of the coin is Queen Elizabeth, a symbolic figurehead, someone without the power to sign laws into effect and who waves and smiles politely. Mr. McGuinty, you're not a figurehead, you're a leader on conservation issues, and right now your caribou conservation strategy needs some serious teeth if it's going to do its job.

Please act now to fulfill your promise to protect woodland caribou. You can uphold the spirit and intent of Ontario's Endangered Species Act by drafting regulations to identify all caribou range as habitat, and by keeping logging out of population ranges that cannot tolerate more habitat destruction. These components are crucial to the survival and recovery of caribou in Ontario's southern Boreal Forest, and across Canada.

Every month that passes without a credible caribou conservation strategy means another flip of the coin for the survival of Ontario's caribou.

What'll it be, Premier? Heads or tails?
