To help the homeless pet population, we need affordable spay/neuter!

Animal rescuers have been begging for more resources for years. Despite the efforts of many, the homeless pet population continues to grow with no end in sight.

Animal welfare is a low priority for lawmakers. That needs to change.

Spay/neuter is a simple solution to a big problem, so we are asking Congress to allocate funding for low-cost spay/neuter nationwide.

While we know this is a big ask, it is doable. Counties in some states have programs that allow residents to easily access low-cost spay/neuter and vaccinations, so why can't everyone else?

Everyone is struggling, which means animals are suffering. It doesn't have to be this way.

Dear Representative/Senator,

The animal rescue/welfare community is in dire straits. Thousands of people are working tirelessly day after day to help animals, but they can't keep up with the need.

The cost of veterinary care has had a negative impact on adoptions, which means shelters and rescues are operating at max capacity week after week.

What will animal rescue look like over the next few years if this pattern continues? There is only so much space; there are only so many resources. Tens of thousands of animals will never receive help at this rate.

A consistent problem with a simple solution is spay/neuter. While there are low-cost clinics, many are still not affordable for people, which means their pet(s) are having litter after litter, only contributing more to the number of pets in need of homes.

As your constituent, I am asking you to allocate funds to provide resources, perhaps via a voucher program or tax incentive to veterinary offices, to make spay/neuter more affordable nationwide. If spay/neuter became more accessible, we could cut the homeless pet population significantly, and it would give rescues and shelters the ability to help more animals.

A county in North Carolina created a fund that people donate $1 to when registering their vehicle. That county is able to provide free or extremely low-cost spay/neuter to their residents. This is one of many ways this request is doable. The result of making spay/neuter more accessible would be significant in making progress with a seemingly neverending problem.

I hope you will consider taking steps to provide this much-needed resource. Animal welfare needs help in many ways; this would be a significant leap in the right direction.

Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.

Sincerely,
