A bill recently proposed by Republican Congressman Paul Gosar would eliminate regulations related to oil and gas drilling, including fracking, in America's national parks. Currently, the National Park Service has the authority to ensure the safety of park air, water, and wildlife, prior to any development. The proposed change would enable companies to drill without detailed safety plans and with essentially no government management.
If enacted, H.J. Res. 46 would provide nearly unlimited freedom for drilling companies at great expense to the national park industry, the most beautiful places in the United States, and the wildlife that depends on these ecosystems. Under the proposed new law, drilling companies:
According to The Wilderness Society, America's national parks are home to more than 150 national forests, 560 wildlife refuges, and 200 sites in the BLM's Conservation Lands system. A 2016 study estimated that the economic value of America's national parks was $92 billion. However, many people, including myself, consider these ecosystems and their wildlife to be priceless.
Please sign this petition urging members of Congress to protect our national parks from oil, gas, and fracking by voting against H.J. Res. 46, as well as other proposed laws that compromise the preservation of these incredible places. H.J. Res. 46 is one of many attempts to completely eradicate environmental protections and give increased power to the fossil fuel industry. Together, we must send a strong message that we will not tolerate these actions.
Dear Honorable Members of the United States Congress:
A bill recently proposed by Republican Congressman Paul Gosar would eliminate regulations related to oil and gas drilling, including fracking, in America’s national parks. Currently, the National Park Service has the authority to ensure the safety of park air, water, and wildlife, prior to any development. The proposed change would enable companies to drill without detailed safety plans and with essentially no government oversight.
If enacted, H.J. Res. 46 would provide nearly unlimited freedom for drilling companies at great expense to the national park industry, the most beautiful places in the United States, and the wildlife that depend on these ecosystems. Under the proposed new law, drilling companies:
America’s national parks are home to more than 150 national forests, 560 wildlife refuges, and 200 sites in the Bureau of Land Management’s Conservation Lands system. A 2016 study estimated that the economic value of America’s national parks was $92 billion. However, many people, including myself, consider these ecosystems and their wildlife to be priceless.
I strongly urge you to protect our national parks by voting against H.J. Res. 46, and any other proposed laws that compromise the preservation of these incredible places. Please do not compromise these ecosystems for the benefit of the fossil fuel industry.
Thank you for your consideration.
