Justice for kerlin and her family
, the congresswomen made a statement rejecting the complaint filed by English teacher Kerlin Sugey Murillo Mena, from the municipality of Paya, Boyacá.
Murillo, originally from Chocó, recounts that in the municipality of Paya, both she and her two children faced racism, bullying, and alleged sexual abuse. These incidents occurred in the rural area of Morcote, at the Institución Educativa El Rosario, after the lifting of emergency health measures that forced schools to return to in-person classes. According to Murillo, she and her children were met with hostility from both colleagues and the school principal, Jorge Humberto Cuy Niño, because of their Afro-descendant identity.
She also claims to have been subjected to workplace harassment, rejection, and mistreatment from the school’s staff. However, when the aggression turned toward her children, she was forced to file a racism and discrimination complaint with the Police Inspector’s office in Morcote.
Among the violent acts her children, ages 5 and 9, endured, Murillo describes physical assaults and a horrifying sexual abuse incident where one of her children had their genitalia tied with a rope, subjected to physical harm, and allegedly assaulted sexually.
For the congresswomen of CLEM, the violence inflicted upon Murillo and her children is a clear violation of the human rights of women and children. They expressed their strong condemnation of these acts and called on the Attorney General of the Nation to urgently send a commission to Paya, Boyacá, to investigate and address the case with the seriousness it requires.
Additionally, they expressed their solidarity with Kerlin Sugey Murillo Mena and her children, demanding protection and psychosocial support to help them recover from this traumatic situation.
However, despite the gravity of the case, the Colombian government has failed to take action. Murillo has been left with no support from the state, and she is now facing severe economic difficulties. Her family’s challenges continue to grow, especially in terms of legal fees and medical therapy for her children who are suffering the psychological effects of the abuse.
At this point, Murillo is turning to us for help, as the only support she can rely on is from people like you. The donations will go directly to cover legal costs and medical bills to ensure her children receive the therapy they urgently need.
We have the power to make a difference. Let’s come together to help this family during their time of need and ensure they receive the justice and care they deserve.
