A Petition to City Hall by Tenants for Social Housing
Tenants for Social Housing came together earlier this year to stand up for our homes and for social housing in Toronto. We oppose the sale and privatization of our homes, and advocate for a stronger tenant voice in the decision making that affects our lives.
Tenants refuse to be the scapegoat for a budget crisis at TCHC. We believe everyone deserves a decent, safe and affordable place to live which is why we believe that social housing must be expanded and not sold off for a one time cash grab!
We've already seen 22 homes approved for sale by the City, over 700 homes waiting to be approved, and now, each and every home is being threatened to be sold.
We are asking for Toronto's Mayor and Councillors support to stop the sale of our homes.
We, the undersigned, are tenants and supporters of social housing and oppose the proposed privatization of the 58,500 homes in Toronto Community Housing.
Improvements are needed to social housing but privatization does not solve the issues with repairs, it only shifts the responsibility without dealing with the problem. Private landlords are accountable to their companies and social housing is accountable to tenants and taxpayers.
Tenants must have a voice in the decision making of their homes to make sure that the best decisions are being made. Tenants need to elect their own tenant representation on the TCHC board of Directors, and have a strong voice for the tenants from the tenants.
We believe it is crucial to keep social housing in Toronto becuase it provide supports that create healthy, safe and thriving communities inside and outside of TCHC.
