Support The Creation of a New Brooklyn Middle School

Join us, a group of parents in District 22, 18, Flatbush, Flatlands, Ditmas Park, Midwood, Marine Park, and Mill Basin who have organized with experienced educators to create a New Brooklyn Middle School. Our proposal was submitted to NYC Public Schools Department of New Schools in June 2024. We have since successfully moved our proposal forward through the review process, found a location, and are close to the finish line. Families in South Brooklyn are increasingly frustrated with the lack of reasonable middle school options. Many parents feel they have no choice but migration north into higher performing schools districts, where more student-centered educational opportunities are offered. This out-of-district enrollment negatively affects quality of life for our children while emptying our district of students and funding. Kids who stay fight for preferred spots while struggling to find adequate academics. The lack of nearby quality options is a source of tremendous stress for families and lowered educational outcomes for students.

Admissions
The New Brooklyn Middle School is designed as an open enrollment school; students are not screened and are admitted by lottery. We envision the school beginning with three cohorts of sixth-grade students and growing into a 6-8 school over time.

Location
We have a preferred location and several additional viable lease options on the north side of District 22 and 18, near transportation and close to Brooklyn College.

Leadership Profile
Our proposed Principal brings 25 years in education and 5 years in administration. She recently participated in the Aspiring Principal Fellows and the PBL Works NYC Administrator Cohort.

Partnerships
Wehave already established partnerships with Flatbush Development Corporation and STEMKid. We have begun conversations with Brooklyn Navy Yard STEM Center, Expeditionary Learning, and Pan in Motion and other curriculum and after-school partners. We hope to partner with Outward Bound and we continue to reach out to parents and community partners.

School Mission

  • Middle School/HS in South Brooklyn that fosters creativity and knowledge through an inquiry-based learning paradigm that is aligned with state standards in an emotionally supportive environment
  • School built on the inquiry or problem-based learning model, Project-Based Learning. Based on the premise that all students are gifted and that igniting curiosity strengthens student learning
  • Assessment of student learning based on the work of the NYC Public Schools Competency Collaborative
  • Equity model with at least fifty percent of students considered economically disadvantaged (average district rates)

    

Student Experience Key Features

  • Students will experience the Expeditionary Learning curriculum similar to the success of New York City Public Schools such as the Brooklyn School for Collaborative Studies
  • Scales, sustains, and restores what works to ensure a quality education for all students
  • Rich curriculum grounded in STEM/Engineering and City Planning, Music and Visual Arts, Math, and creative writing and literature through project-based learning, including farming/gardening
  • Curriculum aligned with the NYS standards while fostering individuality and ingenuity
  • The primary assessments for students will be performance-based assessments

     

Graduate Profile

Middle School graduates will be innovative, creative problem solvers that work collaboratively as they fulfill leadership roles in their careers and society. They will choose one of the following pathways after the first semester at the NBS:

  1. STEM Curriculum is to provide opportunities for Engineers to engage in the process of science, computer science, and engineering and design through STEMKids  Brooklyn Navy Yard STEAM Center partnerships. Our graduates will have a knowledge of inter-relational aspects of a community's needs, engineering and urban planning.
  2. Music & Arts: Modern Band & Music Production, Visual & Digital Art, Writing, Drama
  3. Business and Entrepreneurial Innovation.
