Shut Down the Indonesian Zoo Association

  • by: P Holmes

Indonesia's Animal parks/Conservation institutions are a sham.

Over 90% of zoos in Indonesia are in deplorable conditions where zoo owners fail to even provide the very basic need for food and shelter for the animals. Indonesia even boasts a travelling circus where dolphins are forced to jump through rings of fire.

Requests by numerous non profit organizations to work with The Department of Forestry and Environment to help bring about real and genuine changes/ improvements to the lives of these animals held hostage, were denied. Instead, the department chose to work with the Indonesian Zoos Association (PKBSI) which is set up the zoo owners.

The culprit Perhimpunan Kebun Binatang Seluruh Indonesia (PKBSI), has no interests in improving the conditions and lives of these poor animals. According to a report by Smithsonian Magazine, the Secretary General of the Indonesian Zoo Association (PKBSI) tasked to clean up the zoos, "took healthy animals to his privately run safari park and left the sick ones to rot and die".They should not be entrusted to bring about improvements. The conditions in Bandung and Surabaya zoos and deaths of many zoos animals speak for themselves.

PKBSI is not the solution, they are part of the problem.

Please join me to insist that Secretary General Tony Samampau of PKBSI be removed and PKBSI shut down. A new neutral and balanced organization must be set up to include JAAN and Scorpion Wildlife Trade Monitoring Group for the animals and to enforce the law of 2011 basic animal welfare law and bring about real change where the physical and psychological aspects of the animals are addressed and fulfilled.

PLEASE BOYCOTT INDONESIA AS YOUR VACATION DESTINATION and BOYCOTT INDONESIAN MADE PRODUCTS UNTIL JUSTICE IS DONE AND POSITIVE CHANGE BROUGHT ABOUT FOR THESE POOR INNOCENT ANIMALS. It is the only way to end animal cruelty. Thanks as always for your support!

Dear Madam Minister,

I am sure you agree that your country has been bestowed with magnificient flora and fauna.

It is very sad and disturbing that over 90% of your zoos are in deplorable conditions, where zoo owners fail to even provide the very basic need for food and shelter for the animals. Indonesia even boasts a travelling circus where dolphins are forced to jump through rings of fire.

Elephants in zoos are shackled and Yani the young endangered Sumatran elephant died a terrible death, shackled to the ground. This is pure animal cruelty! Why has the owner of Bandung Zoo not been arrested and punished according to your Law No. 5/1990 which states:  Every person who kill, capture, keep protected species (alive or dead) can be sentenced to five years in jail and fine of IDR100 million (US$7,400.00).

Then you have Safari Park owner who is the Sec General of PKSBI breeding endangered Sumatran tigers. Why allow this when the endangered Sumatran tigers are left to die in Surabaya Zoo? Why have you denied requests by numerous non for profit organizations, eg JAAN to work with your department to help bring about real and genuine changes/ improvements to the lives of these animals held hostage.

The culprit Perhimpunan Kebun Binatang Seluruh Indonesia (PKBSI) you have tasked to clean up the zoos has no interests in improving the conditions and lives of these poor animals.

If PKBSI is the solution, zoos in Indonesia would not have been in the spotlight of the news media, year after year. They are part of the problem and are clearly in the back pockets of zoo owners.

The Secretary General Tony Samampau of PKBSI must resign and PKBSI shut down. I know many NGOs would be more that happy to help you set up a balanced organization. This new organization must include JAAN and Scorpion Wildlife Trade Monitoring Group to represent and give voice to the animals and also to enforce the department's 2011 basic animal welfare law and bring about real change where the physical and psychological aspects of the animals are addressed and fulfilled.

There is no shame in accepting help. It only shows character and integrity.

Thank you for your kind attention.

In October 2018 elephants were beaten and stabbed by their handlers in Taman Safari Bogor Indonesia https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6307009/Elephants-trunks-stabbed-taunted-excited-tourists-Indonesia.html

Taman Safari is one of the groups touted by zoo protectionist Cee4Life helping the Bandung Zoo.

Taman Safari Bogor is run by Mr Tony Samampau, Secretary General of PKBSI (Indonesia Zoo and Aquarium Association). Taman Safari actively breeds their animals and has a baby zoo.
