Rescue the abandoned animals in Uttarakhand

The recent flooding and landslides in the North Indian state of Uttaranchal have left hundreds of abandoned horses, mules and water buffalo stranded in muddy areas with no escape. Initial aid to the region was focused on rescuing the humans stranded in the area, but it is time to take care of the helpless working animals that have been abandoned with no food or shelter. Animal activists have gone to the region to feed and help the animals, but are not able to reach them all.  Private citizens and activists have raised funds and combined efforts to save as many animals as possible, including the airlift of an emaciated mule (now named Hope) who had no food for over 25 days. However, a coordinated effort by the Indian armed forces could airlift the animals out of the area, and air drops of fodder and food can keep the animals alive until they can be rescued.

Below is a message from one of the individuals trying to save these starving animals, who points out that the use of a helicopter is essential to keep the animals alive and to rescue them:

Guys.... its EMERGENCY time now. You guys wanted to know how you can help. START A PETITION! Address it to [the Central Government]. I don't know. Whatever works.

The horses are emaciated. And they are not on the verge of dying. THEY HAVE STARTED DYING.

I can only give you figures.

Yesterday in Kedarnath: 144 animals (128 horses and 16 cows/buffaloes)

Rambada: 10-15 stuck in wet mud; 10-15 Critical in emaciated condition (don't know if they are alive still)

250-350 animals in Rambada in patches.
