Destroy the Canadian Harp Seal Hunt!

I am thirteen years old, and I have a cause to fight for.  Every year, hundreds of thousands of harp seals are clubbed, then skinned alive for their precious fur.  This is the largest slaughter of any marine mammal.  It is extremely inhumane, and it's important to protest.  The population has been affected by global warming, so when you take the already declining species, and take away the 250,000 some killed every year, you have a huge problem.  Female harp seals only bear one pup a year, so when you take out the 250,000 some killed and add in the 1 per female, you start to see that the species is in desperate need of our help.  Once the harp seals are all killed off, we will have an over population of small fish and crustaceans, which the seals feed on.  The fish and crustaceans will breed rapidly and decrease the amount of sea plants by a huge amount.  Please join me to protect this wonderful creature, the harp seal.

Dear Prime Minister,

The seal hunt as it stands today reflects poorly on Canada's reputation throughout the world.  I have collected signatures from around the globe to prove that people care about this issue and want this blatant cruelty to animals abolished immediately.  I accept that Canada's economy depends on this hunt in some ways, but I am equally certain that any profit that is realized from the hunt can be replaced by promoting tourism.  My family intends to visit the area and we hope to be able to see all that this beautiful region has to offer, including the harp seals in their infant coats.  We know that there are groups who offer this type of tourism, and are sure that more would take advantage of this opportunity if promoted.

Global warming and climate change are already decimating the population of harp seals because of the melting ice- but if we let them repopulate and ended the hunt, Canada could use them as a huge marketing advantage.  Canadian harp seals could be advertised, and I believe, could draw tourism to Newfoundland and surrounding areas.  I hope that you will consider what I have said, and make changes accordingly.

Sincerely,

Ms. Maggie Kjeer, and all of the people who have supported this petition.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks again for supporting Destroy the Canadian Harp Seal Hunt! But once again we have fallen short of our goal by more than half of the signatures that we need for Canada to even notice us. Please share this petition on Facebook, by email, and via Twitter. Also, if you would like anything added to the message to Stephen Harper, or would like to add something to the information section, just send your idea to harpseals.maggie@gmail.com.
