Allow Mel to Walk With His High School Class in 2014!

My son Mel was enrolled in Volcano Vista High School until a horrible brain injury occurred in a surgery in March 2013. This injury has made it so Mel has not been able to get the credits that he needs to receive a diploma, and that we understand. We are not asking for his diploma. We are asking that Mel NOT miss out on the chance to walk with his class in 2014.

Mel had just lettered in Academics and was doing his best to fit in with his class even going to football practice and helping with water boy duties. Mel had great school spirit, attending dances and always making the staff and other kids laugh.

Mel has never stopped receiving APS services unless he was in the hospital. The brain injury has left Mel basically locked in his own body unable to walk or talk. It would be unethical for APS to take this away from him after all he has been through.

Update #111 years ago
We are overwhelmed by the outpouring of support Mel and our family have received. We would like to thank Superintendent Brooks and Albuquerque Public Schools for their decision to let Mel walk with his friends at graduation. It is certain to be a special occasion for Mel and his classmates and we look forward to the joyful occasion.
