Let’s fight for justice in the name of the horses that recently faced abuse, neglect and cruelty at the hands of their “devoted” owner.  The owner responsible for these beautiful equine is a 48 year-old woman, Ms. Hickerson from Palisades Park.

In late summer, investigators paid a visit to the property where the woman resides after receiving some tips on evident neglect of the horses. What they found was very disturbing; two horses were dead, 26 were emaciated and a couple of the mares with foals were extremely malnourished.  On a scale of 1 – 10 with 1 being emaciated and 10 being obese, these horses all ranked a one or two.

Aside from the two horses that lost their lives to such neglect and abuse, the remaining horses are now on the road to recovery with regular veterinary care.  Once they are healthy, socialized and treated properly, the horses will find responsible new homes to live out their lives in a happy, appropriate manner as they should.

Ms. Hickerson is facing 21 counts of animal cruelty as a result of the property search and animal neglect/cruelty.  She is also indicted with misdemeanor charges for transporting animals in an unsafe manner. The felony charges Hickerson faces carry maximum penalties of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine, according to local news release. There are also misdemeanor charges that max out at 90 days in prison and a $1,000 fine.

On top of everything, this woman already has an outstanding case of animal cruelty in the Spokane District Court.  Maybe if laws were a little more stringent with comparable punishment, these horses would not have been subject to such cruel treatment because the woman wouldn’t and shouldn’t have been allowed to bring another defenseless precious animal into her neglectful, uncaring and irresponsible life!

Law Makers and State Legislators In Spokane and Nationwide – We all just don’t understand how this woman who already faced animal cruelty charges was allowed to keep all these horses, putting their lives in jeopardy.  Someone needs to look into more stringent laws and punishment for anyone abusing or neglecting an animal.  These creatures cannot protect themselves – make laws that defend those without a voice and slap longer, stronger restitution for the abusers and make a difference.
