The number of Caribou in Baffin Island has declined dramatically, dropping from 180,000 to less than 5,000. However, banning hunting would hurt the Native Inuit population, for whom the Caribou hunt is a valued ritual.
To help improve the Caribou population, banning sport and trophy hunting would be an option that would not threaten the aboriginal population. Canada should also look into how to manage Caribou herds to help the population rebound.
