Don't Deregulate Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs)!

HFCs leak from household appliances like refrigerators and air conditioners. Although the amount of HFC the United States produces is small compared to other greenhouse gases, it's still important to prevent it from escaping into the air since HFCs are often thousands of times more harmful than carbon dioxide. Ironically, the very air conditioners we're using to cool ourselves are just heating the planet further with HFCs.

That's precisely why the Obama administration instituted regulations dealing with HFC. The previous EPA required relevant manufacturers to fix appliances that let off excessive HFC and also conduct tests and estimates of how much HFC new products would emit, both concepts seemingly perfectly sensible.

Nevertheless, the Trump administration is hell-bent on eradicating whatever good Obama's EPA did and is therefore advancing proposals to change these regulations. Not only would these repairs and tests no longer be warranted, but buildings that rely heavily on cooling devices (think ice skating rinks and supermarkets, for starters) would shed all obligation to fix their broken machines or send a report to the EPA when they notice their machinery is leaking a lot of HFC.

We the undersigned call upon Congress and the White House to end their plans for deregulating these dangerous chemicals.
