Upon my latest check in about the status of the beautiful and historically important Seaside Sanitarium, I was heartbroken to find out that it is slated to become a resort/spa/restaurant destination. Not only would this completely remodel the original structure, but it would disrespect the history and lost lives that this building represents. The Seaside is right in the middle of an area that is already cluttered with restaurants, resorts, spas, cafes and shops of various types. The market for yet another spa / resort type building is over saturated. I strongly believe there are better uses for this majestic building. We must honor its history and importance. I call for the building to be turned into a museum, library, and/or research center. This building was used for many things including mentally ill patients, the elderly and those with tuberculosis. Rather than squash the buildings significance, I say we make it right and honor it. Turn it into something beneficial to the town and those who live, work and study in it. The area and building should remain open to the public, and the building should be brought up to code and refinished. I ask for your signature and support in preserving this crucial piece of Connecticut history.
