On March 6, 2025, a pole vaulting accident changed my life. I went from being an active, healthy 15-year-old to barely being able to move or breathe due to a cervical spinal cord injury. The accident paralyzed me from the shoulders down, shattering my goals as pole vault captain at Foothill High School.
The fantastic team at UCSF Benioff Oakland Children's Hospital helped get me to a more stable state. After three weeks, I got to the point I could finally be moved from the ICU. I'm challenging myself to regain strength and do a little more every day.
On top of everything else, I'm getting to know the inefficiencies of the healthcare system firsthand. I've been stuck in a limbo for 3 weeks because insurance delays have left me in between intensive care and rehabilitation. My insurance is still reviewing my request to go to a specialized, cohort-based teenage spinal cord rehab program at Craig Hospital in Denver. Being with a group of peers going through what I am facing will bring me the confidence and motivation to recover to the fullest degree.
There is so much I want to do, including awareness about spinal cord injury, pole vaulting safety, and accessible design.
I know very clearly in my heart what Craig's TRAC program will mean for me and hope that the medical community will support me in my journey.
Please sign this petition to encourage my insurance to do the right thing. Every signature and every share matters. Thank you!
