Protect Farm Animals From Needless Barn Fires: Update the Fire Code in Ontario

  • by: Amelia Meister

In the month of January there were six major barn fires in Ontario, burning hundreds of animals alive. These tragedies could have been prevented through using simple preventative fire safety measures such as smoke alarms or sprinkler systems. However, the current Ontario Fire Code is over 20 years old and outdated.

The current fire code does not take into account the farming trend towards over crowded conditions, nor does it require any preventative measures in barns, not even smoke alarms. To protect these animals we must ensure that the Fire Code be updated to include preventative measures, such as smoke alarms, in all barns in Ontario.

Sign today to stand up against the needless risk to farm animals. By signing you send a strong message that animals deserve protection under the Ontario Fire Code.

To the Honourable Yasir Naqvi,

I am writing today to demand that the Ontario Fire Code be updated to include preventative measures, such as smoke alarms, in all barns containing livestock.

In light of the recent six barn fires in January, it is obvious that there is a problem. Not only are these animals being subjected to the cruel fate of being burned alive needlessly, but farmers are losing their livelihoods.

Preventative measures like fire alarms are a reasonable solution that saves the lives of farm animals.
