Bring Back Culture to Eurovision! Songs in Native Language
From 1966 until 1973 and from 1977 until 1999 all participants were required to sing in one of the official languages of the country that they were going to represent. We believe that this rule should be reinstated because The Eurovision Song Contest should be not just a song contest but also a cultural experience and that a large part of this is the language in which the songs are performed. We also find it strange that in a contest that aims partly to give people from across Europe an insight into other cultures that some participants choose to perform in an artificial language that only they can understand and bears no relationship whatsoever to the language and culture of the country they were choosen to represent.
We, the undersigned, believe that Eurovision songs should be held in one of the official languages of the participating country. This stems from our belief that The Eurovision Song Contest should focus more on offering the viewers a taste of the culture of the participating countries and that a large part of the cultural aspect of a Eurovision song is the language in which it is performed.
