Stop the King Amendment to the Farm Bill!

  • by: Lynn Hamilton
  • recipient: The United States House of Representatives

Few enough state laws currently protect animals from being abused as well as exploited in commercial transactions. So why is the United States House of Representatives trying to eradicate those slim protections?

That's exactly what the King amendment to the Farm Bill would do, according to the Humane Society of the United States. Authored by Iowa Congressman Steve King, the amendment would suspend regulations that protect farm products (i.e. formerly living, breathing animals) during transport from one state to another.

This dangerous King amendment would have far-reaching implications for animal welfare and would likely give rise to atrocities like shark fin fishing, horse slaughter, puppy mills, and cruel farm animal confinement in too-small pens and corrals. Tell the House to strike the King amendment in the next draft of the Farm Bill!

We the undersigned are outraged by the implications of the King amendment.

Few enough state laws currently protect animals from being abused as well as exploited in commercial transactions. We have enough illegal puppy mills without now encouraging legal ones to blossom. We have enough horse slaughter and cruel confinement of livestock like chickens and pigs without suspending what few protections these living, suffering animals currently have.

Please strike the dangerous and far-reaching King amendment before it turns the United States into an even more cruel nation than we already are!
