Demand to end backyard breeding Now!
Consumers have been increasingly impacted on buying sick puppies from pet stores, there have been many lawsuits as well, but for the outcome of these consumers losing their precious pets to sickness and ending in death. Some people feel with no help in sight but as we all should know by now as of December 15, 2024 all pet stores will be closed down, due to the passing of the puppy mill pipeline. (Which I am more than happy) BUT here is the issue that these animals will still continue to face. Agriculture and markets will not renew pet dealer licenses, but they also state that pet dealers and backyard hobby commercial breeders hold the same license but they are not holding them accountable for the same consequences. So with the pipeline passing and shutting down all the stores they are enabling the backyard breeders to face more genetic and congenital diseases due to not being tested correctly and allowing them to be bred with family members. I have spoke to many people and organizations and feel my story is not being heard enough which was no different from buy a dog from a pet store but from a backyard breeder who doesn’t care about the animals but saw dollar signs. My story starts with getting a Cavalier King Charles spaniel & when you get a dog they should be healthy. Fast forward a little but my little girl is now gone at the age of 2 from congenital kidney disease due to poor breeding and not being tested. I did do constantly keep in touch with the “breeder”. I started to notice after she went for her third puppy shot something wasn’t right. A couple of days later she started to get a head shake I took a video and immediately sent it to the breeder. She told me her head could be heavy from being sleepy and she will take care of it if something needs to be done. It just continued to go down hill from there. So the vet visits started and also and emergency vet visit happened. From there I kept asking her for help and it was nothing but excuses and refusing to care or help. Meanwhile,Josie’s entire litter was sick but she was only willing to help the ones that she knew what was wrong with them. The had EFS (episodic falling syndrome) very common in this breed. She knowingly knew the mom and the dad have a recessive gene and just continued to breed them. Josie was at the vet constantly getting blood work done. After so many months of asking for help I gave up asking and called consumer affairs who I told my story to and sent them everything I had and they were able to help. I was able to take her to court and won. If they are willing to shut down the pipeline then they need to do the same for these backyard breeders. If this continues the courts will be backed up with more cases then they could handle because backyard breeders do not care or vet the animals the way they should. I am asking everyone for Josie’s sake and maybe (Josie’s law) that no one will ever have to endure the hurt and suffering of losing a dog so young who should of had a lot of years and wonderful memories that she truly deserved. I went through so much grief and sadness, but at the end of day I would do it all over again and never change it for the world. The little time I had spent with Josie was worth every minute and every penny a clear conscience knowing she had the chance to get the best out of the time she had. She was a spunky girl with a BIG personality and no fear. So I’m asking for everyone to please see that backyard breeding needs this immediate attention to be banned and made illegal.
