Send Elephants to a Sanctuary and Close L.A. Zoo

Three Elephants, Billy, Tina and Jewel are being exhibited at the Los Angeles Zoo.
In a lawsuit against the zoo, California Superior Court Judge John L. Segal judge has said that the "quality of life that Billy, Tina, and Jewel endure in their captivity is particularly poor." Judge Segal writes,""Contrary to what the zoo's representatives may have told the Los Angeles City Council in order to get construction of the $42 million exhibit approved and funded, the elephants are not healthy, happy, and thriving."

Two of the elephants, Tina and Jewel, are a bonded pair of female endangered Asian elephants believed to be in their 40's- and have endured many decades of intense confinement, abusive training, and constant travel and neglect. They were taken to the San Diego Zoo after they were removed from Will Davenport's facility and care and separated from a third elephant, Queenie, who was moved to the San Antonio Zoo in Texas. All of the elephants were removed from Will Davenport for alleged mistreatment and substandard veterinary care and his failure to procure the proper permits when he bought the elephants in 2006.
They all are entitled to a true retirement in a stable environment where they can get the specialized care they need. Currently, only elephant sanctuaries guarantee the lifelong home these animals need to thrive. Close the Los Angeles Zoo and move the elephants to a sanctuary.
