The PGA of America will be visiting the US Government to discuss the immense positive impact golf has on people, the economy and the environment.

There are approximately 28.7 million golfers in the US alone. The golf industry also provides jobs to over 2 million people in the US, with a total wage income of $61 billion. Golf events and trips have also stimulated the real estate and hospitality industries.

Aside from employing a segment of the US population, the golf industry raises approximately $3.5 BILLION for charitable causes every year. This is more than any of the other spectator sports combined.

Golfers have created programs like First Tee, which impacts the lives of young people by providing learning facilities and education programs that promote character development through the game of golf. First Tee has reached more than 1.2 million young people at more than 500 learning facilities. It has also provided $4.4 million in scholarships to 2,400 students.

For many years the golf industry has also been extremely attentive to environmental issues. Led by Golf Courses Superintendents Association of America and its Environmental Institute they have been constantly seeking ways to better manage the use of water, reduce the amount of acreage and create new habitats for wildlife.

Nearly half of all golf courses increased their acreage of nature/natural/unmowed areas by an average of ten acres between 1996 and 2005.
