Thailand Just Deported a Group of Muslim Ethnic Minorities Back to China, Where They Face the Risk of "Torture and Imprisonment" or Even Death

For nearly a decade, China has been enacting violent, repressive policies against mostly-Muslim ethnic minorities. The United Nations and multiple human rights groups say China's actions amount to crimes against humanity.

Now, dozens of these minorities who fled China to Thailand in search of asylum have been deported back -- a move that has outraged the international humanitarian community, since they could face torture or even death back in China.

Uyghurs, a Muslim ethnic group, are the main target of China's violence. Nearly one million Uyghurs have been rounded up and imprisoned in internment camps since 2017, where they are subjected to horrific conditions including torture, sleep deprivation, sexual abuse, and forcible rejection of their religion.

Those who are not detained -- the entire Uyghur population is approximately 11 million -- are intensely surveiled, restricted from practicing their Islamic faith, and there have even been reports of forcing birth control or sterilization on Uyghur women.

Because of this persecution based on their ethnicity and religion, many Uyghurs have fled China in search of asylum. One such group of people, simply seeking safety and freedom in 2014, were detained in Thailand. In 2025, Thailand has decided to send 40 of those Uyghurs back to China -- a violation of international law, since they face almost certain violence and persecution upon their return!

This is a tragedy, plain and simple. China's actions point to an overt attempt to stamp Uyghurs' identities out -- from restricting their religion, to forcing their birth rate down, to enacting violence, torture, and death on those who do no comply. These are crimes against humanity, and Thailand's decision to send 40 Uyghurs back into China is disastrously cruel.

There are still some Uyghurs detained in Thailand, and we can assume more Uyghurs will attempt to leave China for the sake of their lives and the future of their people. We must stand with them, and all ethnic minorities that face persecution!

Sign the petition and demand that Thailand offer asylum to all Uyghurs who seek it!
