Over a million domestic animals were euthanized last year because no one wanted them. So why are big box pet stores still selling turtles, fish, and exotic birds?
Chances are good these birds, fish, and reptiles were stolen from their families, put on trucks, and thrust into pet stores where they don't belong.
Though the United States has laws restricting the import of endangered species, like parrots, it is impossible for the buyer to know where any animal came from. Animals like baby parrots, turtles, and beta fish are sitting ducks and far too easily captured by unscrupulous traders.
Furthermore, wild animals make terrible pets. Parrots owners often can't find rental housing, and many of them end up going deaf. Pet stores simply need to stop selling animals that belong in the wild.
Please join me in demanding that PetCo and PetSmart stop selling snakes, lizards, turtles, and exotic birds.
