Ban Horseracing—Like Dog Racing, It’s Time to End This Cruelty!

Dog racing has been banned in 44 states because it is cruel and outdated—so why is horseracing still legal? Roughly 2,000 horses die at American tracks each year, with thousands more injured - many left with permanent lameness. Just like dogs, these intelligent, sensitive animals are used, abused, and discarded by an industry that prioritizes gambling profits over their well-being.
Horseracing Is Animal Cruelty: Horses are confined to 12x12 stalls for 23 hours a day and controlled by painful lip chains, tongue ties, and metal bits. They are whipped to run faster, suffer agonizing injuries, drugged without consent, and bought and sold multiple times throughout their short lives—all for gambling and entertainment.
Horseracing Kills Horses: Through its seminal FOIA reporting, Horseracing Wrongs has documented over 11,000 deaths at U.S. tracks since 2014; its research shows that some 2,000 "racehorses" are killed across America every year. Aortic rupture, pulmonary hemorrhage, blunt-force head trauma, broken necks, severed spines, ruptured ligaments, shattered legs. 2,000 - that's about six every single day.
We call on state legislators to pass laws banning horseracing in their states, following the successful model of dog racing bans.
