Help Protect the Arctic Refuge

  • by: WWF
  • recipient: U.S. Senators
In 2017, Congress approved opening the Coastal Plains of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to allow for oil and gas drilling.

The impacts from the seismic testing, drilling, and accompanying infrastructure development in the pristine environment of the Refuge's Coastal Plain would do irreversible harm to the region's wildlife and ecosystems, as well as the people who depend on them.

However, a recently introduced bill, the Arctic Refuge Protection Act (S. 2461) would permanently protect the Coastal Plains of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge from oil and gas development.

Ask your senator(s) to cosponsor the Arctic Refuge Protection Act, and help protect the Arctic Refuge.

Dear [U.S. senator(s)],

I am writing to ask you to cosponsor the Arctic Refuge Protection Act (S. 2461). Introduced by Senators Ed Markey (MA), Chuck Schumer (NY), Michael Bennet (CO), Maria Cantwell (WA), and Tom Carper (DE), this bill would designate the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge's Coastal Plain as a part of the National Wilderness Preservation System—permanently protect it from oil and gas development.

For decades, there has been widespread public support from American voters of all ages and political affiliations for protecting the Arctic Refuge's Coastal Plain from oil and gas activities. In spite of this, Congress included a provision in the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that opens the Coastal Plain to oil and gas development.

This action should be reversed.

Please cosponsor the Arctic Refuge Protection Act (S. 2461), and help save this national treasure from the destructive impacts of oil and gas development. Rather than auctioning it off to the highest bidder, Congress should permanently protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for the benefit of future generations and of the cultures and communities that have depended on these unspoiled lands and their natural riches for thousands of years.
