In November 2023, over a million gallons of
crude oil spilled into the Gulf of Mexico,
devastating the local environment and subjecting countless wildlife to horrific pain and suffering -- and possibly entire species to extinction. The company responsible, Main Pass Oil Gathering Company (MPOG), must bear 100% of the cost of the cleanup.
Period. Sign the petition if you agree! This is devastating. A spill of this magnitude creates long lasting negative effects on the environment, contaminating the water and thus any living things that depend on it for habitat and food sources.
Our environment is already threatened enough due to our dependence on burning fossil fuels causing global temperatures to rise -- we cannot afford for disaster of this magnitude causing more damage! That's not even to mention the wildlife that will absolutely be affected from this million-gallon spill. According to experts, "the world's most endangered sea turtle species, the Kemp's Ridley, was found hatching for the first time in three-quarters of a century" near the site of the spill.
Miraculous progress for these turtles might now be completely undone as these tiny hatchlings struggle to survive in oil-filled waters. The Gulf of Mexico is also the only place in the world where
Rice's Whales live -- and there are
only about 50 left alive! If we lose any more of these threatened mammals, it could mean we lose the entire species.
And right now, these poor Rice's Whales are breathing in and ingesting toxic oil.Since the spill was discovered, over a dozen federal agencies -- making up the National Response Team -- have been working tirelessly to clean up the spill and keep people, animals, and the environment safe.
And while MPOG claims to be involved in the cleanup, it needs to be bearing the brunt of the financial burden. Why should US tax dollars be used to clean up a mess that this fossil fuel company solely caused? We demand transparency into how the cleanup is being paid for, and for MPOG to take on the entire cost of the cleanup. Sign the petition to demand accountability for this horrific crisis for our environment and wildlife!
