Please don't prohibit Dick Cheney from speaking at BYU
Individuals who administer, represent, and serve the institution of Brigham Young University, along with Vice President of the United States, Richard Cheney, enjoy full civil rights as citizens of the United States, should not be subject to public censorship or infringement of their right to speak freely.
As alumni, students, faculty, and friends of Brigham Young University and its sister institutions, we were saddened to learn that some have chosen to exploit the occasion of Vice President Richard Cheney addressing BYU’s graduating class on April 26th to promote their personal political views, under the guise of representing the public interest. We are concerned that this action represents an unwarranted endorsement of minority dissident voices who believe they can further their fringe agenda by outshouting the opposition.
This attempt to impose censorship of opposing views clearly violates the neutral policy of BYU’s sponsoring institution, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We therefore respectfully request that such petitions to BYU be tabled, permitting Mr. Cheney to speak freely. Signera petitionenSignera petitionen
