Now more than ever we need to address the rapidly growing problem of food insecurity worldwide. The Global Food Security Act of 2009 is the first attempt to provide a comprehensive strategy for the U.S. to address food insecurity abroad and prevent millions of individuals from falling into poverty and hunger.

I urge you to co-sponsor S.384, the Global Food Security Act of 2009, sponsored by Senators Richard Lugar (R-IN) and Robert Casey (D-PA). S.384 would enhance developing nations' ability to respond to future food crises and prevent millions more from falling into poverty and hunger.
The food crisis of 2007-8 added at least 100 million more people to the 850 million people living at the brink of starvation around the globe. Although food prices declined in late 2008, they have not returned to 2005 levels and prices for staples in many local markets remain high leaving the nearly one-sixth of the world all but forgotten in the wake of the financial crisis.

The Global Food Security Act of 2009 is the first attempt to provide a comprehensive strategy for the US to address food insecurity abroad, make emergency responses more effective, and improve long-term food security by investing in long-term agricultural development. The bill would assist developing nations to improve their food security through agricultural and rural development and enhance the effectiveness of the US emergency response system to future food crises.
I strongly urge you to support the Global Food Security Act (S. 384) and take a bold stance to end world hunger.
