New Petition to Support Affirmative Action Before the U.S. Supreme Court
The Supreme Court are projected to hear the University of Michigan affirmative action cases in 2003. This will determine the fate of affirmative action and integration for the entire nation. The student intervenor-defendants in the case will submit a projected one-million petition signatures to the Court on that day as part of the National Civil Rights March on Washington to Defend Affirmative Action & Integration.
The outcome of the two Supreme Court-bound University of Michigan affirmative action cases will determine whether our society moves forward towards greater equality or backwards to resegregation and greater inequality. Affirmative action plans are desegregation programs for higher education. They are the only successful method for integrating all of this nation's universities.
We the undersigned:
- Call on the U.S. Supreme Court to uphold affirmative action;
- Stand on the two fundamental premises of Brown vs. Board of Education, first that separate can never be equal and second, that integration is necessary for democracy, justice and progress; and
- Pledge to open the doors of higher education to all.
