Tell Chinese Government to Say NO to Cloned Livestock!
China plans to open a huge animal cloning facility to produce 100,000 cattle embryos for meat. Other hopes for the cloning center include making copies of champion racehorses and successful police dogs.
The European Union recently voted to ban the sale of cloned meat. It is still legal in the US, though, and requires no special labeling. This means US consumers would have no way of knowing whether the meat they buy comes from clones.
The European ban cites animal welfare concerns related to cloning. The European Union’s environment committee co-rapporteur, Renate Sommer reports that "Many of the [cloned] animals which are born alive die in the first few weeks, and they die painfully. Should we allow that?”
A vegetarian diet, not more cattle production, is the answer to solving world hunger. According to a United Nations report, "Impacts from agriculture are expected to increase substantially due to population growth increasing consumption of animal products. Unlike fossil fuels, it is difficult to look for alternatives: people have to eat. A substantial reduction of impacts would only be possible with a substantial worldwide diet change, away from animal products."
China needs to educate its citizens on eating a healthy, plant based diet. Cloning livestock and other animals is not a sustainable solution to solving hunger. Please sign the petition to urge China to scrap their plans to build an animal cloning facility!
