Tell the Liberal Party to Ensure Every Voter Counts

  • av: Broadbent Institute
  • mottagare: Maryam Monsef, Minister of Democratic Institutions; Prime Minister Justin Trudeau; and the Liberal Party, Canada

Nine million votes were wasted in the 2015 election under Canada's winner-take-all electoral system – that's more than the populations of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and the Atlantic provinces combined!

It's clear - Canadians have a broken electoral system: it produces false majorities, exaggerates regional divisions and leaves huge numbers of voters without a voice in Parliament.

It is time for change. Canada needs a fair voting system in which every voter counts.

The Broadbent Institute is leading the fight for a proportional representation voting system - an electoral system that is fair, representative, and engaging.

We need your help to ensure that the Liberal government honours its commitment to make the 2015 federal election the last one using our outdated first-past-the-vote system. We can't get this wrong and make our unfair system even worse.

Let's replace it with a fair voting system based on a simple principle: the number of seats held by a party in the House of Commons closely matches their actual level of support throughout the country. A system that provides a way for Canadians to choose a local representative and see their political views represented in Parliament with equal and effective votes for all. Only one electoral system does that: proportional representation.

Add your name to the growing list of Canadians asking that every voter counts in the next federal election with the only electoral system that can make it happen: proportional representation.

Dear Prime Minister Trudeau.

During the 2015 election, under Canada's winner-take-all electoral system, nine million votes were wasted. It is clear to me that as a country, we have a problem with our electoral system: it produces false majorities, exaggerates regional divisions and leaves huge numbers of voters without a voice in Parliament.

It is time for change. Canada needs a fair voting system in which every voter counts.

That is why I am urging you to honour your commitment to make the 2015 federal election the last one using the outdated first-past-the-post voting system.

But let's not get this wrong or make our unfair system even worse.

Please ensure that every voter counts in the next federal election. Please bring in proportional representation.

Sincerely,
[Your name]

Did you hear the news? The Liberals supported an NDP motion to reconfigure the composition of the special parliamentary committee on electoral reform to reflect how Canadians voted in the 2015 federal election. A majority of voters cast their ballot for candidates others than the Liberals, and the committee now reflects this. Let's show the Liberals that Canadians care about electoral reform and believe in the principle of proportionality for our voting system - share the petition!

Today the government announced the launch of a special parliamentary committee to study new voting systems. This is a positive step, but just the beginning of a long process to ensure a more fair, engaging and representative system.

The only way to do that – as well as advance the first key principle identified by Minister Maryam Monsef – is a proportional system. Please share this petition. We need to tell the committee that Canadians want proportional representation.
