The Lac Alaotra bamboo lemurs are small, gentle primates that may fade into history before we even know much about them. Listed as criitically endangered by the IUCN, they live nearly invisible lives in the vicinity of a single lake in Madagascar. Much of this quiet lemur's habitat was lost when marshes were converted to rice paddies. Now hunting and marsh burning, a common practice in Madagascar, threaten the remaining lemurs. Please join with me in asking the Madagascar Parliament to stop hunting and marsh burning in the lemur's habitat.
To the Parliament of Madagascar:
We the undersigned are devastated to learn that the gentle Lac Alaotra bamboo lemur is hovering on the verge of extinction. It appears that hunting and marsh burning are destroying what few of these primates remain in the lake region of Madagascar. So much of the lemur's habitat has already been destroyed via the loss of marshes that the species' population has declined eighty percent in the last twenty-four years. We implore you to recognize and take better care of this rare animal. Please outlaw the hunting of the Lac Alaotra bamboo lemur and prevent further burning of marshes where this lemur lives.
