Stop the Rush to Frack in North Carolina!
Fracking is a controversial process of drilling for natural gas. It is being investigated for potentially being linked to groundwater contamination in Wyoming, earthquakes in Northeast Ohio from the waste disposal process, and methane contamination leading to tap water that can be lit on fire in Pennsylvania. In 2012, NC legislators passed a bill that legalizes fracking but does not allow permits for drilling. This bill established a two year commission to study and create rules and regulations on fracking before permitting would be allowed.
Now, some legislators are moving to allow fracking immediately, even before this issue has been fully studied by the appointed commission. We shouldn't rush into this controversial practice when so many questions regarding its safety are still left unanswered.
Tell Governor McCrory and your state legislators that this rush to frack in North Carolina is unsafe and unacceptable!
Dear [Decision Maker],
Recent news reports have suggested that some legislators are moving to allow fracking in NC immediately. As a concerned constituent, I urge you to stop this rush to frack our state and let the appointed commission have the necessary time to study this issue.
Rushing to allow this controversial practice before the Mining and Energy Commission has had a chance to fully study this issue is unacceptable. This is especially troublesome when there are still many questions left surrounding the process and the impacts to our communities.
