After a heated debate, the Exhibition Place Board of Governors voted 4-3 on Friday to ban electronic dance music (EDM) parties from the properties they control the Better Living Centre and the Direct Energy Centre.
Proponents of the decision, like Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti, claimed it will save children’s lives while critics, like Councillor Gord Perks, argued it will push the events into unsafe venues, put kids at risk and cost the city-owned facility almost $1 million in annual revenue.
The push to ban the events from the grounds began after Muzik nightclub — which also operates at Exhibition Place — wrote to the board originally claiming the large-scale, one-time events were causing booking problems for its business and “negative public relations issues.”
