Protect the Torricelli Mountain Range
The Torricelli Mountain Range is home to a rich diversity of flora and fauna, including endemic species found nowhere else in the world. This includes the critically endangered Tenkile and Weimang tree-kanagaroos. The Tenkile Conservation Alliance has been working successfully for 20 years to protect the area, but there is still work to be done. We want to ensure the Papua New Guinea government keeps to their promise of recognising the Mountain Range as a National Park.
Unfortunately, the Torricelli Mountain Range is facing numerous threats, including illegal logging. These activities are destroying the habitat of countless species and threatening the livelihoods of local communities.
We ask for existing laws and regulations that prohibit illegal logging in the Torricelli Mountain Rang to be enforced.
Also increased funding for conservation efforts in the Torricelli Mountain Range is required, including the establishment of protected areas and the provision of alternative livelihoods for local communities.
We believe that protecting the Torricelli Mountain Range is not only important for preserving the natural heritage of Papua New Guinea, but also for ensuring the long-term well-being of local communities and the sustainability of the country's economy.
We request immediate action to protect the Torricelli Mountain Range for future generations.
