A Statement in Support of the Scholarship of Rochelle Gutiérrez from members and friends of the SIGMAA on RUME: As an organization committed to equity and inclusiveness in mathematics education, we affirm our commitment to our scholarly right to critically examine: the historical, social, and cultural practices of mathematics; the institutional and sociological factors that can lead to structural exclusions; and the ways in which methodological practices may evolve to avoid perpetuating inequities in our educational system. We affirm the rights of scholars to engage in this work and value the contributions of scholars who do so in the face of political challenges and personal dangers. As a community who has drawn heavily on the excellent scholarship of Dr. Rochelle Gutiérrez and who recognizes her as an exceptional and pioneering scholar, we express our support of her scholarship and condemn the hateful actions she has had to endure via social media and as a result of the actions of organizations, who do not seek equity for all. Debate is critical to scholarship, slander and violence are not.
