Another bull has suffered the consequences of the horrifically abusive bull riding industry. This time it happened at George Mason University's EagleBank Arena during the Professional Bull Riders Challenger Series. After frantically rushing out of the chute with the rider on his back, the bull fell and crushed his back leg. Then, somehow, the situation got even worse: the poor animal was literally dragged out of the arena by a rope tied around his neck and legs. Why does this cruel sport still exist in the United States in 2022, and why are taxpayer dollars being spent on these events?

It is no secret that bull riding is at best downright dangerous for the cows and horses involved and at worst fatal. Bulls are often prodded repeatedly with spurs and tasers in an attempt to exaggerate and intensify their bucking behaviors. As a result, broken legs, broken backs, ripped tendons, and punctured lungs are all too common during bull riding. And this is how these events make money: off the intended injury and pain of bulls, which is apparently entertaining to some event attendees.
To make matters worse, this specific incident took place at a public university. This means that in some capacity, taxpayer dollars contributed to an event which led to the tragic injury and abuse of this innocent animal. Publicly-funded institutions should never be complicit in the cruel punishment of bulls for entertainment, and it is time the USDA hold someone accountable for this tragedy.
