Override Mayor Daniella Levine Cava’s Veto and End Forced Fluoridation of Public Water

To the Honorable Members of the Miami-Dade County Commission,

We, the undersigned residents of Miami-Dade County, urgently request that you override Mayor Daniella Levine Cava’s veto and enact legislation to immediately halt the practice of adding fluoride to our public water supply. Fluoride, a known neurotoxin, poses significant risks to the health and well-being of our community, particularly our children, and we demand the right to clean, unmedicated water.

    Why This Matters:
    1. Fluoride is a Neurotoxin: Scientific studies, including those published in Environmental Health Perspectives (2017) and The Lancet Neurology (2014), have linked fluoride exposure to cognitive impairments, including reduced IQ in children. A 2019 study in JAMA Pediatrics found that prenatal fluoride exposure is associated with lower IQ scores in offspring.
    2. Forced Medication Violates Choice: Adding fluoride to public water constitutes forced medication, denying residents the ability to consent or opt out. This infringes on our fundamental rights to bodily autonomy and informed choice.
    3. Disproportionate Harm: Low-income communities and communities of color, who often lack access to filtered water, are disproportionately harmed by fluoridation, exacerbating health inequities.
    4. Questionable Benefits: The purported dental benefits of water fluoridation are minimal compared to modern dental care practices, and topical fluoride (e.g., toothpaste) is more effective and does not require systemic ingestion.
    5. Environmental Impact: Fluoride compounds used in water treatment, such as hydrofluorosilicic acid, are industrial byproducts that can contaminate waterways and harm ecosystems.

    Our Demand:
We call on the Miami-Dade County Commission to:
    1. Override Mayor Levine Cava’s veto of any resolution or ordinance aimed at ending water fluoridation.
    2. Pass a binding ordinance to immediately cease the addition of fluoride to Miami-Dade’s public water supply.
    3. Protect public health by ensuring our water is free from neurotoxic substances and respecting our right to choose what enters our bodies.

The Science is Clear, and the People Have Spoken:
The risks of fluoride outweigh any claimed benefits. Over 95% of the world’s population does not fluoridate their water, and countries like Canada, the Netherlands, and Germany have ended the practice due to health concerns. Miami-Dade must join this global movement to prioritize public health and safety.

We, the residents of Miami-Dade County, stand united in our demand for clean, safe, and unmedicated water. We urge you to act swiftly to override the veto and protect our community from the harmful effects of fluoride.
