On January 1st, an 800 pound male elk was shot and killed by on-duty police officer Sam Carter of Boulder, Colorado. A uniformed sheriff's deputy arrived on the scene, and off duty police officer Brent Curnow showed up in a pickup truck and took the elk home to butcher it for the meat.
Boulder police officers are supposed to file a report whenever they discharge their weapon, no matter the circumstances, but the officers filed no report with the supervisors of the Boulder Police Department.
They also filed no report as they are required to do with Colorado Parks and Wildlife to determine whether an animal needed to be put down, and did not notify dispatchers before they shot an animal. They also had no permit to take meat home, or to harvest the antlers.
Samson's Law, passed in 1998 after a well-known bull elk in Estes Park was killed by a poacher who was fined just a few hundred dollars, adds substantial fines for the killing of trophy animals. The killing of a bull elk with six-point antlers or larger can carry a fine of up to $10,000, on top of the other criminal penalties for violating hunting rules.
We ask that these officers be fired from the Boulder Police Department, and face the maxium fines and other criminal penalties for poaching and violating hunting rules.
