The Po Delta, located between Venice and Ravenna, is a majestic area home to more than 300 bird species and dozens of mammal, amphibian and reptile species. Among them, many are migratory, such as the flamingo and eel.
But a new legislative proposal is threatening this paradise of biodiversity.
Currently, the Delta is preserved only by two regional protected areas, which resulted inefficient in saving its biodiversity - they are strongly influenced by local hunting lobbies.
As a consequence, the biodiversity is steadily decreasing: the salinity of the lagoons and wetlands is changing, poachers regularly harvest resources in the Delta area and tourism is discouraged by poor services.
The recent institution of this area as a Man and Biosphere Reserve, while indicating the need for a unitary management is not enough to guarantee an effective protection.
The new bill currently discussed by the Italian Parliament is going to lower even more these protection levels by allowing local administrations to oppose any future joint management.
Therefore, we call the Italian Parliament to immediately institute the Po Delta as a National Park in order to preserve its biodiversity in the long term and improve its accessibility for nature lovers.

Il Parco del Delta del Po accoglie più di 300 specie di uccelli, 40 specie di mammiferi e 25 tra anfibi e rettili, che includono molte specie migratorie come il fenicottero e l'anguilla, considerata “in pericolo critico”.
Divisa tra due regioni (Veneto ed Emilia-Romagna), la gestione dei due attuali parchi regionali è influenzata da lobby locali legate a cacciatori e ad altri portatori di interesse.
Come conseguenza, la biodiversità nel parco è in costante diminuzione: una gestione scorretta degli argini sta cambiando la salinità nelle lagune; i bracconieri hanno sempre più libero accesso al parco; il turismo è scoraggiato dagli scarsi servizi .
Perciò chiediamo che il Governo trasformi urgentemente il Delta del Po in Parco Nazionale, seguendo il modello storico del Gran Paradiso. I fondi che verranno così ottenuti serviranno a creare una forza anti-bracconaggio efficace, a ripristinare gli argini, ad avviare progetti di conservazione su ampia scala che garantiscano la protezione delle specie prioritarie. Questo consentirà di attrarre un numero crescente di turisti da tutto il mondo, come già avviene per altre aree in Europa (Camargue, Delta del Danubio), tutelando al contempo le tradizioni locali già valorizzate dalla UNESCO.
