A break in at a zoo in Poland, Lodz Zoo, has left two giraffes dead.
The vandals broke in overnight on Saturday to Sunday at the zoo in Lodz where they destroyed benches, signs and sculptures and hurled pieces of the debris at the animals.
One of the giraffes died within hours from a heart attack, a 3-year-old female named Suri. The second, 6-year-old female Hana, was found dead on Monday morning from aggravated stress and was slightly ill before the incident. One male survived.
City authorities and the national Animal Guard watchdog organization have offered a 5,000 zlotys ($1,500; euro 1,100) reward for any clues that help find the hooligans.
We ask the Zoological Institute to put pressure on Lodz Zoo to fire the zoo's security guards which didn't call police until hours after the hooligans left the facility, which is not equipped with CCTV cameras. They did nothing to safeguard the security of the endangered Rothchild Giraffes in their care.
