On October 11, the Topeka City Council voted 7 to 3 to repeal city laws against domestic violence.
Citing a budget dispute with the County Prosecutor, Council members boasted that the move would give them "leverage" in ongoing negotiations.
According to the New York Times, "Eighteen people have been arrested on domestic violence charges since September and released without charges because no agency is accepting new cases."
Please tell the Topeka City Council to reinstate its law against domestic violence
We the undersigned urge you to reinstate your domestic violence laws.
Domestic violence remains a problem for the city of Topeka. Since September, there have been thirty-five reported cases of domestic violence, and eighteen arrests. There have been no prosecutions.
Please reinstate Topeka's laws against domestic battery, and once more prosecute cases of domestic abuse, to prove to your citizens that the city of Topeka does not tolerate violence in the home.
