The United Nations is Failing Burma!
Petition for October 24, 2007 - United Nations Day
For presentation to the Consuls General at the respective San Francisco consulates of China, India, Russia and Singapore.
Burma is ruled by one of the most brutal military dictatorships in the world. Last month Buddhist monks and nuns took to the streets, chanting prayers in a call for human rights. As these peaceful protests spread, the Burmese military cracked down and shot, beat, arrested, imprisoned, disappeared and killed protestors. The military continues its night time raids, rounding up monks, activists, and anyone suspected of having supported the marches and is sending them to prison where they will likely be tortured, have no trial, and remain in jail in inhuman conditions for many years.
On the occasion of United Nations Day -- a day on which we are reminded of the achievements and core values of the United Nations -- we, the undersigned, believe that the United Nations has failed and is failing the people of Burma.
We call on the United Nations as a world governing body to exert maximum pressure on the government of Burma to stop the oppression, release all political prisoners immediately, and instigate genuine dialog with the democratically elected National League for Democracy.
In particular, we call on the governments of China, Thailand, India, Russia and Singapore to immediately end their political and economic support of the military regime and to end their role as co-conspirators in the horrendous human rights abuses of the Burmese people.
