Stop Falmouth Dredging Project
- av: Judith B.
- mottagare: George Osborne, Chancellor of the Exchequer, UK
Falmouth Bay is a beautiful area of the English coast with a wealth of marine wildlife. It has a thriving seafood industry and attracts thousands of tourists a year. At least, it does at the moment. If plans for a massive dredging project go ahead, the habitat could be ruined.
The plans involve dredging a deep channel to allow enormous cruise ships to visit the docks, the argument being that this will create jobs. However, the dredging could devastate the bay, ruining wildlife habitat and being disastrous to the seafood industry.
The proposed channel would cut through the fragile maerl habitat - a home to a diversity of marine life, which also forms a nursery for commercially important species such as scallops and crabs.
Don't allow the large-scale destruction of one of Britain's most attractive coastal areas to go ahead. Ask George Osbourne to stop pushing for a misguided and destructive project.
We the undersigned ask that you stop pushing for the dredging of Falmouth Bay. Currently protected, this area is contains essential marine habitat, which dredging could devastate.
The proposals would also set a dangerous precedent for the large-scale destruction of other protected areas.
Short-term economic gains should not be put ahead of protecting the UK's remaining natural places. When these places include important marine ecosystems, the long-term consequences, in particular the impact on the seafood industry, far outweigh possible short-term benefits.
We ask that you stop campaigning for such destructive projects.
Thank you for your attention.
